Final Destination- San Juan, Puerto Rico

Reflecting on an Unforgettable Caribbean Journey. After touring the stunning islands of Tortola, St. Thomas, St. Lucia, St. Kitts, and Antigua, it was time to return to San Juan, Puerto Rico, a city that held special meaning for our family. Matthew and I had visited before, our older daughter, Alyssa had visited, but this was Olivia and Jenna’s first time experiencing its vibrant charm.

Arrival and Morning in San Juan

We disembarked the cruise ship and dropped our luggage at Patio Elba Hotel (Address: 415 Calle del Cristo, Old San Juan, PR 00901), a cozy and conveniently located spot in Old San Juan, though check-in wasn’t until 4 p.m.

With some time to pass, we ventured out for breakfast at Abra-Cadabra (Address: 102 Calle Tetuán, Old San Juan, PR 00901), and it was absolutely worth it. Their fresh, flavorful dishes and cozy atmosphere were a perfect start to our day. My cinnamon packages were made to order!

After breakfast, we passed the dog park Parque Santurce,

strolled to Parque Santurce (Santurce, San Juan, PR), a lively urban park where locals gather for recreation and community events.

Nearby, we visited the Museo de Puerto Rico (299 Avenida Ponce de León, Santurce, San Juan, PR 00907), which offers an engaging exploration of Puerto Rico’s art, culture, and history—a wonderful introduction for those wanting to dive deeper into the island’s rich heritage.

Exploring Old San Juan

We took an Uber for about $10 to Castillo San Felipe del Morro (Address: 501 Calle Norzagaray, San Juan, PR 00901), the iconic 16th-century fortress guarding the bay.

We wandered beyond the usual tourist spots, exploring hidden paths, talking to locals, trying local beverages, and soaking in breathtaking ocean views that captured the spirit of Puerto Rico.

Later, we wandered down Calle de Fortaleza, one of the most charming streets in Old San Juan, beautifully decorated with festive Christmas lights and decorations that added magic to the cityscape.

Though it was bittersweet to see that the famed Umbrella Street (Calle Fortaleza’s popular umbrella installation) was no longer there, the area still retained its lively and colorful ambiance.

We stopped by Marshalls for a quick look, but nothing caught our eye this trip. After a full day of walking and sightseeing, we returned to Patio Elba, checked in, showered, and ordered dinner through DoorDash, savoring a quiet night before an early flight.

Departure and Journey Home

Our flight day began at 4 a.m. when we booked an Uber to the airport, arriving within 10 minutes. At the airport, we carefully went through the U.S. Department of Agriculture check to ensure no soil or seeds were entering the mainland, then moved through passport scanning, photo verification, and TSA security smoothly.

Boarding our connecting flight, we reflected on the incredible week behind us. Though we made it home safely, the cold greeted us harshly, reminding us just how precious those warm Caribbean days had been. The rhythm of the cruise lingered—after so many days at sea, walking on land almost felt like rocking on a boat!

Final Thoughts

Cruising for seven days felt just right—long enough to experience six islands and add new magnets to my refrigerator collection, but also long enough to stir a bit of homesickness. Three days is too short; over seven can feel too long.

I ended 2025 with a spectacular birthday and unforgettable memories from ten countries- an absolute blessing! It was a challenging year emotionally, physically, and financially, but it also strengthened my faith, resilience, and self-awareness. I stand assured in who I am in Christ, grateful beyond measure for my friends, family, and the Lord, whose mercies are new every morning.
